Gilbert has one of the most inventive introductions around, just one of several great ideas that pepper his enjoyable set.Much of it revolves around a ridiculous shaggy-dog story, which starts with him using his grandmother's pancreas as a football.
Although this extended routine risks leaning on gratuitously sick and the surreal to maintain its momentum, Gilbert does use the unfolding scene to hang several great gags on. And as more punchlines are revealed throughout this well-constructed scenario, the ridiculous premise becomes decreasingly important.
That's not the only string to his bow, further diversions into home-made childhood toys prove even more fruitful, throwing up some delightful - if unlikely - images. It's a world of his own, into which audiences are invariably sucked, and they are well-rewarded for doing so.
This is someone who certainly knows how to structure a joke. For sheer invention, well delivered, he has few rivals.
Gilbert is a truly original voice - and a brilliantly funny one.
