ONE of the comedic success stories of the past few years, Michael McIntyre has gone from the bottom of the bill in small regional comedy clubs to one of the most recognised faces on television and beyond.
His meteoric rise has seen his debut DVD Live & Laughing become the fastest selling debut stand-up DVD ever on its release in 2008 and his position as the hottest name in British comedy was confirmed in June 2009 when he hosted BBC’s primetime Saturday night TV show, Michael McIntyre’s Comedy Roadshow.
He was nominated at the 2008 British Comedy Awards for Best Live Stand-up and the 2009 South Bank Show Awards for Best Comedy. In 2008 he was the fastest selling comedian at the Edinburgh Festival and sold out five nights at London’s 3,600 capacity Hammersmith Apollo.
His second libe DVD Hello Wembley, recorded during a recent sell-out run at London’s Wembley Arena, is due for release in November.
A former public schoolboy – Merchant Taylors no less – the self-confessed posho, who grew up in Hampstead, with the impish grin and infectious laugh has endeared himself to punters and critics alike with a self-deprecating style of ovbservatonal comedy that people of all ages, class and backgrounds can relate to.
With a subject matter based around the classic middle-class British obsessions of the weather, manners, social etiquette, young people today etc…, the man himself told the BBC: “I don’t really do jokes, I just talk. I tend to laugh at them myself because I find them funny. I don’t do gags, just observational comedy. I just collect all these stories and try them out.”
Already a familiar face through his almost ubiquitous appearances on every comedy TV gameshow going in Mock The Week, , Have I Got News for You, The Big Fat Quiz of the Year, Would I Lie To You?, and The Apprentice: You’re Fired as well as regular outings on Jonathan Ross and other chat shows, McIntyre has appeared twice on BBC One’s Live at the Apollo and also on the Royal Variety Performance, in both 2006 and 2008.
He also appeared in the televised We Are Most Amused at the New Wimbledon Theatre in aid of the Prince’s Trust, to mark the 60th Birthday of Prince Charles. Michael was a guest judge, alongside Anton du Beke and Spice Girl Emma Bunton in the first round of Let’s Dance for Comic Relief, and again in the final at this year’s charity comedy marathon.
As a guest on the BBC show Top Gear as the Star in a Reasonably-Priced Car, he achieved a respectable time of 1 minute 48.7 seconds, despite nearly rolling the car at one point. No stranger to accidents, McIntyre dislocated his shoulder when he slipped and fell while walking back on stage for an encore at a show in Wolverhampton in 2008. Like the late, great Tommy Cooper before him, many of the audience thought it was part of his act and laughing until his manager came on stage to help him out.
Tottenham fan McIntyre lives in Muswell Hill, London with his aromatherapist wife, Kitty, and their two sons, Lucas and Oscar.
