It was the largest comedy event of the year and it really paid off, £869,492.81 to be exact!

Some of the top names in UK comedy dropped into London’s Great Ormond Street Hospital on Friday to present staff and patients with a cheque for the money raised from Channel 4’s Comedy Gala at the O2.

Lee Evans, Alan Carr, Michael McItnyre, Kevin Bishop, Jack Dee and Shappi Khorsandi presented staff and patients a cheque for an impressive £869,492.81 – which was a combination of box office takings and an advance for the forthcoming DVD release of the gala.

Over 35 comedians took the stage in March to perform at Channel 4’s Comedy Gala at the O2. The comedy extravaganza watched by 15,000 comedy fans at the O2 featured a world class collection of stars all giving up their time to support Great Ormond Street Hospital. The event was so successful plans are under way for Comedy Gala 2011.

Alan Carr, who opened the show on the night, said: “Wow! What a night! And what an amazing amount of money for Great Ormond Street - bring on next year!”

Before Michael McIntyre added: “I’m absolutely thrilled that so much money has been raised for such a fantastic cause. This event will help so many children and I’m delighted to have taken part.”

The money raised from Channel 4’s Comedy Gala will fund two new anaesthetic rooms, allowing parents to stay with their child right up until they enter the operating theatres.

Kevin Lygo, Director of Television at Channel 4 said: “We’re delighted to have raised so much money for Great Ormond Street hospital, and grateful to all the comedians who waived their fees to help us put on such a spectacular event.

“If only the comedians had been a bit funnier maybe we could have reached the magic million. Ah well, next time.”

Comedy News: Comedians Poke Fun For Charity

It had the biggest comedy line-up in history and here’s a few snippets of what went on at channel 4’s Comedy Gala…

Jonathan Ross has poked fun at his Film 2010 successor Claudia Winkleman as he helped host a special charity event.

Hosting part of Channel 4’s Comedy Gala at the O2 Arena in London, Ross joked: “It’s great to be here but the way my career’s going, it’s great to be anywhere.

“I had to get here quick before Claudia Winkleman stepped in.”

Meanwhile, comedians Patrick Kielty and Sean Lock risked the wrath of Michael Jackson fans with their respective sets.

Lock said he was relieved to “finally” get to the O2 after buying tickets to see Jackson perform there, while Kielty said the charity was an appropriate one “because no two words sum up [Jackson's] career more than the words ’sick’ and ‘children’”.

Jo Brand also braved a turn, despite battling a bout of norovirus, and Hollywood star Johnny Depp pre-recorded a message expressing his regret at not being there.

Lee Evans was presented with a lifetime achievement award by Jack Dee. Evans auctioned the gong winning a bid for £5,000 from somebody sat in the one of the hospitality boxes.

Alan Carr said he and his fellow comedians battled backstage nerves at the event.

“Everyone’s nervous. There’s a lot of wind. The catering person can’t give any food out because I’m like ‘you’ll see it again’. No-one’s eating, everyone’s pacing,” he joked.

Comedy News: The Oldies Are Comedy Gold!

Worldwide Comedy News Updated Daily

Even though there are hundreds of young, fresh, modern comedians out there, here’s the proof that we really do love our classic old jokes - it’s the way ya tell ‘em!

Despite a boom in observational humour and topical satire on television panel shows, many older viewers are turned off by angry young comics who turn to bad language and abuse, the survey found.

However, classic gags from traditional stand-ups including late comics like Cooper and Les Dawson are popular, according to the survey by question and answer-style search engine, Ask Jeeves.

Only one in five adults – 21 per cent – think current comedians such as Sean Locke and Frankie Boyle are as funny as those from previous generations.

The survey also found 55 per cent think modern comedians swear too much to make them laugh, and that simple laughs such as knock, knock and doctor, doctor jokes are better.

The search website also revealed that searches for ‘why did the chicken cross the road’ jokes were among the highest in the humour category on its pages.

According to its survey, Billy Connolly topped the list of ‘greatest comedians’ with 51 per cent claiming ‘The Big Yin’ made them laugh while Frankie Boyle only got votes from 28 per cent of those surveyed and only 22 per cent voted for Sean Locke.

Some managed to cut across the generations: the late Tommy Cooper did as well with the under-30s as the much younger comedian Alan Davies, for instance.

From the modern crop of stand ups, clean cut Michael McIntyre is as popular with the over-60s as classic Frank Carson.

Nadia Kelly, spokeswoman for Ask Jeeves, said: “From Billy Connolly to Tommy Cooper and knock, knock jokes to why did the chicken cross the road, the old ones still make us laugh. We are constantly surprised by the large numbers of people who go on to Ask Jeeves to search for jokes on certain subjects or to look up punchlines that they have forgotten.”

The top ten favourite comedians (percentage of those who voted):

1. Billy Connolly – 51 per cent

2. Victoria Wood – 47 per cent

3. Tommy Cooper – 45 per cent

4. Michael McIntyre – 44 per cent

5. Lee Evans – 42 per cent

6. Jimmy Carr – 41 per cent

7. Les Dawson – 40 per cent

8. Frank Skinner – 33 per cent

9. Jim Davidson – 33 per cent

10 = Ricky Gervais – 32 per cent equal with Bill Bailey – 32 per cent

Although there’s a few newer names in the mix such as Michael McIntyre, it’s still the same clean, family friendly comedy that we enjoy the most.

News Feed: - Lee Mack Is Back!

MACK is back – and audiences around the country couldn’t be more delighted about it. The comedian Lee Mack is embarking on a huge nationwide tour. Due to phenomenal demand, extra dates have just been announced for the autumn, taking the tour up to a massive 97 dates And it would certainly be a grave disappointment to miss Lee. He is one of the most compelling live performers in the country. But don’t just take my word for it. The critics have been queuing up to heap praise on Lee’s coruscating new show.

When we chat in the run-up to the tour, Lee is on sparkling form. He is a comedian – and this is not always the case, I can tell you – who is just as funny off stage as on it. Lee, who also writes and stars in the immensely popular BBC1 sitcom, Not Going Out says that, “the best comedy you can ever have is when you’re in the pub with your mates. You can never beat that! That’s what I try to recreate in stand-up.” And he succeeds magnificently.

The other great thing about Lee’s comedy is that he doesn’t set out to lecture, merely to entertain. Nor does he have set subjects that he has to tick off during his act – he is such a talented stand-up, he is able simply to go with the flow.

“I never have fixed subjects that I discuss on stage,” Lee observes. “I never go on with any particular subjects in mind. If I spend ten minutes talking about my wife, it’s because I have ten loosely connected, wife-related jokes! It’s very flexible. If I’ve got a joke about size ten shoes, I’ll make sure that for the sake of the act my wife wears them! My show is not about anything. It’s not meant to be thought-provoking. It’s just meant to be a laugh.” And it is certainly that.

Because he enjoys such a tremendous connection with his audience, Lee is reluctant to follow the current trend for comedians to play arenas. “It’s the latest vogue. I could have done a night at the O2 in London, but I couldn’t bring myself to do it. I’m not being big-headed, but for my act I can’t be talking to an audience of 12,000 people. There’s no intimacy.

“I don‘t think it’s good to have people watching you on a giant TV screen when they’ve paid to see you live. They’ve come to a live and they want to experience that. I was on the bill at the Christmas show at the NEC in Birmingham, which holds 12,000 people. It was great for fifteen minutes, but I couldn’t chat to the audience. You can’t ask someone in the front row, ‘what do you do for a living?’ and then shout out to everyone, ’he’s a butcher’. For me, it’s just the wrong vibe for comedy.”

Lee, who is also a resident team captain on the highly enjoyable BBC1 panel game, Would I Lie to You?, continues that, “the bigger the venue gets, the more you get away from what’s intrinsically best about comedy. If you can do one night at a 12,000-seater, why not do four nights at a 3,000-seater? It’s still pretty well paid!”

One of Lee’s most appealing traits is that he is resolutely un-fussed about being trendy. His comedy is not tied to any particular vogue – it’s timeless. “I’ve never been able to keep my finger on the pulse of fashion,” he reflects. “Unfortunately, comedy is increasingly becoming more like pop. It’s all about brands and competition, regardless of whether or not it’s good for comedy.”
